What are Sun Salutations?
Surya means ‘sun’ and namakars mean ‘salutations’, ‘obeisances’, or prayers’. The postures are performed traditionally at sunrise, when the air is deemed to be rich in prana (cosmic energy). The series is a proven vitalizer, bringing a youthful suppleness to the pine and firming and toning the entire body. Each position has its valuable physiological effects, some of which were described earlier. Though much more that just a warm-up, the Sun Salutation serve that function when performed at the start of a Yoga program.
The Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara in Sanskrit) limbers up the whole body in preparation for the asanas. It is a graceful sequence of twelve positions linked by a continuous flowing motion, and accompanied by five deep breaths. Each position counteracts the one before, stretching the body in a different way and alternately expanding and contracting the chest to regulate the breathing. Start by doing six rounds and gradually build up to twelve rounds. As always in Yoga, do it slowly and consciously.

Sun Salutations are the core of a Vinyasa style Yoga practice. A sun salutation is a series of poses done in succession so that one pose flows into the next. The pace of the flow and how long the poses are held may vary, but the movement is done in accompaniment with the breath. The purpose of the Sun Salutation is to warm up the body for more intense stretches.
